Originally by: Scilent Enigma I was thinking about skills and how they are learned with the upcoming ambulation. There are several things about training skills in Ambulation that had me thinking.
Backstory wise: Training skills requires some rather heavy hightech gadgets that would be way too bulky to carry around on a person, but isn't much trouble when it is part of the pod.
Gameplay wise: Having to stop skill training just to be able to walk around would make it a huge turnoff. Who wants to waste precious training time just to walk around in a station?
Actually you have this a little bit wrong. The pod has little to do with the skills and the training of them. You have implants in your head that download skill data. Story wise the timer is how long it takes for the information to safely intergrate into your brain and implants. One thing people should realise is that even though when playing the game itself you only ever see yourself in a ship/pod, that is not the sum total life of a pod pilot. They can get out, they can walk around and it is most likely better for them to do so at least once a day for the sake of their bodily health.
When you log into the game, think of it as stepping into your pod for a while. When you log out, you get out of your pod again and disconnect from it. My character has a start date of June 2003. I cannot imagine that Darius has been sat in a pod all this time while skills train.
Originally by: Scilent Enigma What I'm thinking about is how the training of skills will be handled in ambulation. How will it be solved?
A few scenarios that I can come up with:
1. New advanced learning implants (that everybody gets automatically) that acts like a harddrive that stores the complete knowledge of a skillbook and slowly embedded into the conscious mind of the pilot.
2. Skills have to stop training to be able to walk around. End of story.
3. Skill training doesn't require a physical link, it can be done at a distance as the knowledge is transmitted (via radio or something similar) into the mind of the pilot.
4. You get a new set of skills that is customized around ambulation that is trained by grinding (wow style ).
Well overall I have always pictured your training of a skill to be inserting a little chip like a flash memory card into your implants in your skull. And it begins working from there. The thing is that Ambulation should simply explain the existing physical method of training a skill instead of trying to create something totally new to work around it. Think about it, if it is simply a data chip that you stick in your head, you have it there in your pod, you have it out of pod, you have it when you sleep. And it works away while you do all of these things until it signals your implants that it is done and the skill has been downloaded successfully.
Of course in the existing game play so far, if you are podded then it does not allow for you to continue a half finished skill. Or pause a skill to set another going. This is where you have to think that instead the chip loads a compressed file into your implants and begins extracting chunks of it on command (5 in total for the 5 levels)
Anyway thats just how I see skill training to always have been. It has to be since our characters don't live in the pod for all of their lives. ------
